On "Cuteness"

So I know Japan has a reputation for being "cute". Some people might think that there are various anime characters that posses this characteristic. Also, there exists a common knowledge that this "cuteness" often manifests itself in situations where Japanese people address somewhat unpleasant or traditionally (by American standards) inappropriate situations or topics. I can assure you that all of the above are true. I also anticipated this feature of Japanese life; before leaving the US, I practiced my stoicism daily by spending hours on /r/aww and cuteoverload.com.
