Last night I went with Morita-sensei (of the Economics dept.) to meet the Doshisha Chancellor. I was kind of nervous because I don't really have any experience meeting somebody so important, and there are all sorts of ways to speak and behave during these encounters. I think things went well; we spoke for about 10 minutes about basic things, and the chancellor told me a bit about all of the different Doshisha schools. They have kids from Kindergarten-Graduate School, for a total of about 42,000 students. It's quite an operation.
After the meeting, Morita-sensei took me out to his favorite izakaya (a kind of Japanese bar), where he treated me to some very nice sushi and sake. I also tried my first whale meat, and it was very tasty! Morita-sensei is a very cool guy, and we had a lot to talk about once the subject of microbrew beers was brought up. He used is iPhone to find the closest Kyoto microbrewery, which turned out to be a 5-minute walk from the izakaya. So we waltzed right on over and had a few delicious beers! I had a really great time, and hopefully Morita-sensei and I can hit the town again sometime soon.
I thought I took a picture of that whale meat feast, but there is nothing to be found on my camera, so I guess I was mistaken... sorry!
Tomorrow is my very first English class, and I'm really excited! It's going to be a basic day tomorrow. I'm going over my syllabus with the kids, and we'll be playing a variety of name games (like the good ole high school daze). I'll have an update tomorrow with details about how the class went.
